Healthy feelings people confuse with depression: sadness, grief, disappointment, boredom, dissatisfaction.

In some cases, they’re caused by a specific experience, like being abused, neglected, or bullied; suffering a major loss; or feeling powerless in the face of circumstances beyond your control.

Or you might have developed unhealthy thinking habits or self-defeating behaviors or beliefs.

Here’s an example: A child whines, “I’m not good at this!” while trying to understand long division. Without guidance or support, the child believes they lack the mathematical or technical skills to do it, effectively giving up trying to learn. As an adult, that child struggles with their finances, avoiding them because they make them feel anxious, and feeling powerless makes them depressed.

You’re not powerless, but you might have incorrect beliefs about yourself that drive your anxiety and depression.
